CAPTSpark

CAPTSpark works with children with mild Autism and Mild Intellectual Disability (MID), between ages 7 and 12, aiming to break societal stigmas and promote greater understanding and inclusion. Through structured training and guided sessions, CAPTSpark provides a meaningful platform for CAPT residents to connect, learn, and grow alongside these children.

Directors' Message

Our favourite memories from our time in this ACE is the Dialogue in the Dark tour, where we got to experience a simulation of what living with Visual Impairment is like. We found it both very insightful and also gained a newfound respect for VI individuals.

During our time as Project Directors, we learnt to slow down and pay more attention to the things around us and the needs of the community.

To us, CE is about reaching out to people who we don’t normally get the chance to interact with and learn how life is different for them compared to ourselves. In this process, we not just “give” to them, but we also learn from them, especially their mental fortitude towards life.

Looking forward to getting to forge new friendships with the young students in AISS and for meaningful conversations with the adults from SAVH!

We hope to gain a deeper understanding of Visually Impaired (VI) individuals and their everyday realities. In addition, we hope for mutual empowerment between the engagers and VI community, where engagers learn more about themselves and gain soft skills in interacting , while the VI community is given a safe space to feel heard, and also be equipped with skills that can be useful in their daily lives!

Pre-engagements

Our pre-engagement activities include visits to APSN Chaoyang School, our long-term community partner, where Engagers attend a psychology talk to gain deeper insight into the children they will be working with. In addition, they participate in a short class attachment, providing them with hands-on experience and practical exposure to interacting with children with ASD and MID before the main engagement sessions.

Engagement & Impact

During our engagements, we interact with the students through sessions that focus on teaching relevant life skills or educational topics. We strive to make each session fun, hands-on, and meaningful, ensuring that learning takes place in an engaging and supportive environment. Through these engagements, we hope that Captains develop greater empathy and a genuine heart to teach, as well as the patience and understanding needed to connect meaningfully with children with ASD and MID. Ultimately, we aim for Engagers to grow not only in their ability to support these students, but also in their awareness of inclusion, compassion, and the impact of community engagement.
