Directors' Message

CE Fest is CAPT’s annual flagship community engagement event. It is where we worked with over 18 different community partners, allowing over 250 CAPTains an immersive experience that expanded their worldview. Through CE Fest, we hope for our committee and participants to grasp the mutually beneficial nature of community engagement through the 13 trails we offered. It is also seen in our theme this iteration, which is “Empowering Communities; Enriching Perspectives”.

Past CE Trails

Trail 1: Breaking Barriers: Challenging Disability Perceptions in the Workplace
The trail explores challenging perceptions of disability in the workplace and society. It provides a glimpse into their world, encouraging us to see beyond labels and stereotypes.
Trail 2: Life Beyond Bars
This trail explored how ex-offenders cope and adjust to life after incarceration. CAPTains learned about the challenges of reintegration, the resources available to support former inmates, and the motivations behind turning over a new leaf. The trail featured engagement with representatives from the Yellow Ribbon initiative and interactions with residents of a halfway house through activities and conversations.
Trail 3: Roots to Sustainability
This trail examined ongoing sustainability efforts in Singapore and highlighted how students can contribute meaningfully in their own capacities. CAPTains visited local initiatives and reflected on the role individuals and communities play in advancing environmental sustainability.
Trail 4: Life Anew: Addiction Recovery
This trail broadened conversations beyond the familiar anti-drug narrative to consider the wider spectrum of addictions, including gambling, alcohol, pornography and more. CAPTains engaged with recovering advocates and explored questions surrounding hope, rehabilitation, and community support for individuals working towards recovery.
Trail 5: Origins of Our Island's Produce
This trail focused on Singapore’s local food production industry and the challenges faced by local producers, particularly in the face of foreign competition and economic uncertainty. CAPTains gained insights into how local enterprises adapt and sustain themselves within a highly globalised market.
Trail 6: Rough Sleepers, The Rocky Road
Drawing on findings from Singapore’s 2019 nationwide street count, which identified approximately 1,000 homeless individuals, this trail examined the realities of homelessness in a developed nation. CAPTains learned about the complexities behind rough sleeping and discussed the structural and social factors contributing to the issue, as well as possible responses.
Trail 7: Faiths in Peace
Set within Singapore’s multi-racial and multi-religious context, this trail deepened CAPTains' understanding of different religious traditions, values, and practices. Through guided exposure and dialogue, the trail encouraged greater interfaith awareness and appreciation.
Trail 8: Through a Different Mind: Intellectual Disabilities
This trail centred on the lived experiences of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (PWIDs) in Singapore, whose perspectives are often overlooked. CAPTains explored the challenges faced by PWIDs and examined the roles of families, caregivers, and the broader community. Through case studies, discussions, and interactions, the trail fostered greater awareness, empathy, and sensitivity.
Trail 9: Celebrating the Last Goodbye
This trail encouraged participants to reflect on societal attitudes toward death and the tendency to treat it as a taboo subject. Through conversations with professionals in the death care industry, CAPTains re-examined how death is represented and discussed, and considered the importance of normalising open dialogue about end-of-life matters.
Trail 10: The Colourful World of LGBTQ+
This trail introduced participants to key terminologies related to gender and sexuality while exploring the lived realities of LGBTQ+ individuals in Singapore. Discussions highlighted the challenges faced by the community and considered how allies can offer informed and empathetic support.
Trail 11: Our Home, Our Stories
This trail engaged residents living in rental flats in one of Singapore’s neighbourhoods. CAPTains gained deeper insights into their lived experiences and reflected on issues of inequality and social mobility. The trail prompted consideration of personal and collective responsibility in fostering a more equitable society.
Trail 12: Healing Herbs
This trail brought participants to a community garden in Toh Yi Garden, where they learned about the daily practices, joys, and challenges of community gardeners. CAPTains were introduced to local herbs and explored how community gardening initiatives contribute to environmental stewardship and social cohesion.
Trail 13: Golden Bridges
Against the backdrop of Singapore’s rapidly ageing population, this trail examined the issue of social isolation among seniors. Through conversations and shared stories, CAPTains gained deeper insight into the lived experiences of elderly individuals and reflected on societal attitudes toward ageing and community care.
