CAPTSpark
CaptSpark is a community engagement project under CAPT’s Active Community Engagement (ACE) framework. We work with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Mild Intellectual Disability (MID), aiming to break societal stigmas and promote greater understanding and inclusion. Through structured training and guided sessions, CaptSpark provides a meaningful platform for CAPT residents to connect, learn, and grow alongside these children. Ultimately, we hope to nurture empathy, patience, and awareness, fostering a more inclusive and compassionate community within and beyond CAPT.

Directors' Message
Through this ACE project, one of our biggest takeaways has been a change in perspective towards students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Mild Intellectual Disability (MID). We came to realise that they are incredibly smart, curious, and engaged, it was easy and enjoyable to interact with them, and they were truly fun to teach. One of our favourite memories was being greeted so enthusiastically by the students every week during our engagements; their energy and warmth always brightened our day.
To us, Community Engagement (CE) means more than just going out to do good—it’s about truly understanding the needs and concerns of the community and finding meaningful ways to support them. It’s also a two-way learning process, where we not only give but also grow through the experiences and stories shared by those we engage with.
Looking ahead, we are most excited to continue interacting with the students each week and to watch our engagers grow in empathy, patience, and confidence. Through our time in ACE, we hope to cultivate greater compassion for the community and help others learn to appreciate and connect more meaningfully with individuals of different abilities. Ultimately, we hope that both the students and engagers continue to learn from one another and grow together through these shared experiences.

Pre-engagements
Our pre-engagement activities include visits to APSN Chaoyang School, our long-term community partner, where Engagers attend a psychology talk to gain deeper insight into the children they will be working with. In addition, they participate in a short class attachment, providing them with hands-on experience and practical exposure to interacting with children with ASD and MID before the main engagement sessions.
Engagement & Impact
During our engagements, we interact with the students through sessions that focus on teaching relevant life skills or educational topics. We strive to make each session fun, hands-on, and meaningful, ensuring that learning takes place in an engaging and supportive environment. Through these engagements, we hope that Captains develop greater empathy and a genuine heart to teach, as well as the patience and understanding needed to connect meaningfully with children with ASD and MID. Ultimately, we aim for Engagers to grow not only in their ability to support these students, but also in their awareness of inclusion, compassion, and the impact of community engagement.
