Directors' Message

To us, CE means creating meaningful connections and fostering mutual learning between different groups, where both the community and engagers can grow through shared experiences. We are looking forward to the big smiles and connection as well as growth experienced by both CAPTains and seniors as the engage in the activities we have planned. Through this experience, we hope to strengthen our skills in leadership, collaboration, and communication, gain deeper empathy and understanding of the elderly’s experiences, and create programmes that leave a lasting positive impacthelping CAPTains develop into compassionate, capable, and socially conscious leaders while enriching the lives of the seniors we serve.

Pre-engagements

The first pre-engagement session equipped them with key communication skills such as starting conversations, building rapport, and handling sensitive topics through presentations and role-playing practice. The second introduced them to SASCO @ West Coast, where they learned about the centre’s activities, challenges, and seniors’ perspectives through a sharing by the Programme Senior Executive and a senior from the centre, followed by a Q&A. Together, these sessions gave CAPTains both the skills and contextual understanding needed for effective and empathetic engagement.

Engagement & Impact

Across seven engagement sessions, CAPTains facilitate a diverse range of activities, from games like Mahjong and Rummy-O, handicrafts, and snack-making, to outdoor outings at Fort Siloso and Gardens by the Bay, interactive technology exploration at the SG Assist Living Lab, and movement-based game stations around CAPT. These sessions create natural, meaningful touchpoints for seniors and students to converse, collaborate, and learn together through play, food, creative expression, heritage trails, and light physical challenges. Collectively, the programme fosters intergenerational bonding, supports seniors’ active ageing, and strengthens their sense of community by offering enjoyable, accessible, and socially engaging experiences. Through these engagements, CAPTains grow by building empathy, communication skills, patience, and cultural awareness; they learn to guide and support seniors in unfamiliar settings, adapt to different needs, and appreciate the lived experiences of older adults—all while developing confidence in facilitating community engagement and forming genuine, lasting connections.
