CAPT in the Dark

CAPT in the Dark is a community engagement project that seeks to share the light beyond sight. Through meaningful interactions with the visually impaired community, from Ahmad Ibrahim Secondary School (AISS) and the Singapore Association of the Visually Impaired (SAVH), we aim to foster empathy, understanding, and inclusion. By experiencing the world through senses beyond vision, engagers learn to appreciate diverse perspectives and discover new ways of connecting with others.

Vision Statement

Sharing the Light Beyond Sight

Mission Statement

To nurture empathetic and respectful CITDians by fostering an environment where CITDians and VI individuals charter shared paths through mutual empowerment, surpassing beyond their potential, touching the hearts of others.

Directors' Message

Our favourite memories from our time in this ACE is the Dialogue in the Dark tour, where we got to experience a simulation of what living with Visual Impairment is like. We found it both very insightful and also gained a newfound respect for VI individuals.

During our time as Project Directors, we learnt to slow down and pay more attention to the things around us and the needs of the community. This also allowed us to realise the simple blessings we have in life (our sight!) that we often take for granted.

To us, CE is about reaching out to people who we don’t normally get the chance to interact with and learn how life is different for them compared to ourselves. In this process, we not just “give” to them, but we also learn a little from them, especially their mental fortitude towards life.

Looking forward to getting to forge new friendships with the young students in AISS and for meaningful conversations with the adults from SAVH!

We hope that we will be able to gain a deeper understanding of Visually Impaired (VI) individuals and their everyday realities. Moreover, we hope for mutual empowerment between both the engagers and VI community, where engagers learn more about themselves and gain soft skills in interacting with others, while the VI community is given a safe space to feel heard, and also be equipped with some skills to use in their daily lives!

The best gift is to gift others, and in doing so we also understand ourselves better.

Pre-engagements

Our pre-engagement activities included a visit to Dialogue in the Dark Singapore (DiDSG) and a sharing session by speakers from Guide Dogs Singapore. These experiences offered CAPTains valuable insights into the daily realities of the visually impaired community, allowing them to step into their perspectives and cultivate empathy, sensitivity, and understanding before beginning their engagement.

Engagements & Impact

Each week, CAPTains engage with two key community partners, students from Ahmad Ibrahim Secondary School (AISS) and adults from the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped (SAVH).

At AISS, CAPTains facilitate sessions exploring the four senses beyond sight through hands-on, tactile activities such as musical instrument-making, a sensory escape room, and baking. These experiences aim to promote a sense of empowerment among the students, while enabling CAPTains to form meaningful connections and gain a more personal understanding of the visually impaired youth.

With SAVH, CAPTains conduct skill-based workshops such as baking, arts and crafts, and sensory terrarium-making. These sessions encourage interaction, creativity, and mutual learning, equipping participants with new skills while providing CAPTains the opportunity to understand the lived experiences of visually impaired adults.

Through these engagements, CAPTains develop empathy, patience, and deeper self-reflection, learning to appreciate the diversity of abilities and perspectives across different stages of life.
